Origin Story
The origin story is a classic of the action-adventure genre. How did the characters begin their journey together? What moment defined them as a Cohort that set apart from the common gangs on Anasta? While the default start of play is assumed to be years after this moment, it can be an alternate and familiar way to start playing the game. It could also be used as a fun flashback scenario for an already established Cohort.
Characters
For PCs playing through an Origin Story scenario, there are a few adjustments to character creation.
Expertise
- Characters choose one (1) Rank 2 and one (1) Rank 1 Expertise. They are competent, but not yet the seasoned professionals of a Cohort.
- If playing a flashback, their highest Ranked Expertise becomes Rank 2, and their next highest becomes Rank 1.
Bioform
- Characters choose only one Bioform trait from their chosen Bioform. This may be any of the traits not marked (Growth Only).
- Characters will have Bioform traits marked (Bonus). This does not count against the one Bioform trait chosen.
Psionic Power
- Each character’s Psionic Power begins at Rank 1 instead of Rank 2.
- If playing a flashback, this is their original Power that was created at Rank 2.
Background, Motto, Ethos, and Agony
- Background, Motto, Ethos, and Agony remain the same.
Cohort
For the Origin Story, the Cohort does not yet exist. During the scenario, several things will be established.
Name, Symbol, and Rallying Cry
These are core to the Cohort’s identity and their creation should be part of the Origin Story itself. If playing a flashback, these will be known to the players and GM, but the circumstances of how they arose may not.
Vehicle
The Cohort Mule will either be not yet created, or in a nacent form, depending on what story everyone wants to tell. Part of the story may be the building of the Mule. If the Cohort does have a vehicle available for the Origin Story, it will have two (2) attributes at Rank 2, and four (4) attributes at Rank 1.
Tactics
Thought the Cohort does not yet exist, PCs will still have access to Check This Out to help drive the narrative.
Starting Resources
The PCs will start with one (1) Rank 1 Resource of their choice. If their Mule is not yet created, they have only one (1) Cargo Capacity slot between them.
After the Origin Story
While it is suggested that Characters and Cohorts jump forward to the default starting point of the game (or back to the previous state of the game if playing a flashback), a group that really wants to set up a long campaign could choose to continue from the Origin Story. Be aware that there will be significant Growth and Resources required to reach the default starting point (unlocking all Bioform traits, Ranking up all PCs’ Powers to Rank 2, upgrading Vehicle attributes, etc.).
