The Chantry

The founders of the Chantry discovered that some Moonshards are activated by the precise use of voice and vibration. While some technology can reproduce the exact tones and pitches of an Enchanter singing, Chantry songs elicit and adapt to emotional responses that change from moment to moment. The training to become an Enchanter takes a decade at minimum, and no technology beyond this dedication can awaken Moonshards in the same way. From sunrise to sunset, Enchanters-in-training sing hymns to the Archons, but only the most dedicated manifest the Chanting. For all Enchanters this unique ability is a practicality, allowing them to use Moonshards in a number of ways non-Enchanters cannot. For some, it is also a matter of piety as they take the hymns to heart in true veneration of the Archons. Some of the songs are ancient and predate the Moonfall; others are discovered or created through experimentation.

The Chantry has smaller chapels and monasteries scattered across Anasta. The largest Chantry community is its Cathedral, found just beyond the western edge of the Shimmering Wastes. While considered the heart of the faction, it is not a large settlement by any means, with only the main structure, seminary, and boarding houses for Enchanters-in-training.

Beyond their vast knowledge of Archon Psience, the Chantry operates and controls the Resonant Net, the only long-distance communication technology on Anasta. For this reason they are among the most valued messengers throughout the land.

Relationship to the other factions

Order of the Sun

The Progressives are allies in the study of Ethertech, if toward different ends; the Puritans are viewed as simply misguided.

Sisters of the Deep

The Sisters occasionally enlist the aid of the Chantry in researching found Archon Ethertech or in creating new Ethertech, combining Naga Psience with that of the Enchanters.

Moon Wardens

The Moon Wardens are seen as problematic as they protect the largest sources of Moonshards. While not opposed to the Wardens’ philosophy (and many even respect their devotion), the Chantry and Moon Wardens have clashed on many occasions at Archon sites over the removal of Moonshards.

Cursed

The Chantry welcome Moonblooded into their ranks for their innate skill with Ethertech. The Cursed are viewed favorably, and some Moonblooded Chantry are rumored to also be Cursed.

Generation of Chaos

The Generation will occasionally destroy an Archon site simply for entertainment. This has been known to aggravate the Chantry, especially if they have not yet had a chance to investigate the site.

Wilders

The Chantry maintain relatively neutral relations with the Wilders, but are intrigued by their connection to their companions.

Guild

The Chantry maintains a good relationship with the Guild as the most reliable source of new Moonshards.

The Peacekeepers

The Chantry often find Peacekeepers to be useful hires to guard their chapels. They have been known to have a conflict of interest on occasion, such as when Peacekeepers support both the Chantry and Moon Wardens over Moonshards collected from an Archon site. In such cases, many Peacekeepers might attempt to mediate or otherwise prevent armed conflict from arising.
