Trading Resources

Quick Reference

  • Determine the Rank of the resource desired.
  • Create a Sparrow Challenge based on that Rank.
  • Determine the Rank of the resource that the Cohort wants to trade in exchange.
  • Create a Ranked modifier for the Cohort’s traded resource.
  • Optional: Apply situational traits to the Challenge or Cohort..

Supplies may be found unattended or otherwise ripe for the taking in some circumstances. In most cases, however, the Cohort will trade for them or receive them as payment for a job. What resources are available for trade will be determined by the GM based on the situation.

Determine the Challenge Threat

A Sparrow Challenge is created with a Threat based on the resource Rank:

  • Rank 1 resource: Common
  • Rank 2 resource: Minor
  • Rank 3 resource: Major
  • Rank 4 resource: Extreme
  • Rank 5 resource: Ultimate

Determine the Challenge Rating

The Challenge Rating is equal to 3 x resource Rank:

  • Rank 1 resource: 3 dice
  • Rank 2 resource: 6 dice
  • Rank 3 resource: 9 dice
  • Rank 4 resource: 12 dice
  • Rank 5 resource: 15 dice

Determine the Cohort’s Resource Value

For a party that is neutral towards the Cohort, the Cohort’s resource gives a Beneficial (+) Ranked Modifier for the duration of the Challenge:

  • Rank 1 resource: +1 / 1d
  • Rank 2 resource: +1 / 2d
  • Rank 3 resource: +2 / 2d
  • Rank 4 resource: +2 / 3d
  • Rank 5 resource: +3 / 3d

Situational Traits

The Challenge may have situational traits that can be applied; for example, Shrewd (+2 / 2d) or Doesn’t Like Enchanters (-1 / 3d). The GM may also Rank Up or Rank Down resources being traded by the Cohort depending on how desirable they are to a particular party.

For example, if the Cohort’s Rank 3 Moonshards are highly desirable by a particular merchant, the may trade as if they were Rank 4. Similarly, that particular merchant may have a glut of Scav Supplies, so their Rank 2 Scav Supplies may only trade as Rank 1.

Faction associations may come into play during trade as well, providing Ranked modifiers based on a Cohort member’s Faction Rank.

Example of Setting Up a Trade Challenge

The Cohort wishes to trade for a Rank 3 Venger Supplies with a Guild merchant who has no strong feelings either way about the Cohort. A Major Sparrow 9 Challenge is created based on the desired Rank 3 supplies. The Cohort has a Rank 2 Scav Supplies (+1 / 2d) and a Rank 3 Moonshards (+2 / 2d). The Cohort may use either or both of these Resources to increase their odds of securing the Venger Supplies during the Challenge.

The Cohort decides to trade the Rank 2 Scav Supplies. This gives them a Rank 2 modifier (+1 / 2d) for the remainder of the Challenge. They must complete the Challenge before becoming Stressed Out. If they are successful, they lose the Rank 2 Scav Supplies and gain the Rank 3 Venger Supplies.

Withdrawing From a Trade Negotiation

If a trade Challenge is going poorly for the Cohort and the mounting Stress becomes too much for them (or they are simply Stressed Out), the Cohort may withdraw from negotiations at the beginning of their turn. Both parties keep their resources. Withdrawing from trade Challenges may have an effect on future negotiations.
