Relics of the Moon
A science-fantasy roleplaying game of outlandish action-adventure
(pre-release playtest v0.1.6)

Ethos

Ethos represents your character’s way of approaching potentially stressful or high-stakes situations. It expresses your character’s conscious or unconscious beliefs about how it is best to accomplish a goal and reflects a portion of their personality.

There are five Ethos choices common to life on Anasta. Choose two of these five to represent your character’s dominant ways of approaching situations. This helps to shape their personality as well as gives them a mechanic (Motto) that works both for and against them at certain times.

Cunning

Use wit and wiles to overcome or undermine.

Discipline

Summon focus and willpower to achieve an outcome.

Flair

Attract attention to fascinate the world around you.

Luck

Trust in or submit to the unseen order of the world to move you.

Valor

Call upon courage and emotional reserves to accomplish a goal.

Motto

A Motto should be a simple, one-sentence statement that can help guide a player to make decisions for their character. It is connected to and demonstrates (one or both of) their Ethos. A good Motto can be used in many different situations, and works both for and against the character at different times.

While a Motto can (and should) be used as often as desired in dialog and roleplay, a Motto may be used once per session with the choice Destiny or Doom Destiny Point Doom Point to make this trait A6 A6: Auto Result 6 A 6 .

Example Mottos:

  • “I’m a man of mystery.” (FLAIR)
  • “Failure is not an option.” (DISCIPLINE)
  • “Inconceivable!” (CUNNING)
  • “I want to believe.” (LUCK)
  • “Strike first, strike hard, no mercy.” (VALOR)
  • “Let’s be civilized.” (DISCIPLINE)

Using Your Motto

Your Motto may be used in two ways:

  1. Choose Destiny or Doom to use your Motto as A6 / 1d. You may use this once per session.
  2. Immediately activate another trait that normally requires a Destiny Destiny Point to use. Instead of spending a Destiny Destiny Point , add a Doom Point to the Doom pool instead. It does not actually create a Destiny point (and so may not be banked in the Destiny pool).
