Adding to the Growth Pool
Each character has a Growth pool that is added to throughout each session. During a downtime scene or at the end of a session, players may spend dice from this pool in an attempt to Rank Up or add a new Ability, adjust Ethos or Expertise, or unlock traits or Cohort Tactics.
Characters add to their Growth pool in two ways: Taking Stress and Accomplishing Goals
Taking Stress
A player will add one die to their Growth pool for every 10 Stress (rounding down) the cohort has collectively taken during a scene. Whether or not they accomplish their goals, the intensity of life in a cohort and the challenges it faces pushes its members to grow.
Accomplishing Goals
At the beginning of or during a session, the GM may announce one or more narrative goals that can be achieved. Each goal will be assigned a number of Growth dice based on its difficulty or narrative weight. If the cohort achieves the goal, each player adds those dice to their Growth pool. Goals may be valid for a single scene, multiple scenes, or multiple sessions, depending on the goal. Crafting goals is a good opportunity for collaboration between the players and GM in guiding the session (as well as the overall) narrative.
Maximum Growth Pool Size
The maximum number of dice that can be in a character’s Growth pool is five (5).This encourages players to regularly test their growth by continually pushing their characters to their limits towards greater risks and rewards. If a player would accumulate more than five dice, the excess dice are lost.
